This is Part 1 of a longer conversation... Professor Shir has a great fondness for the book of Deuteronomy and its connections throughout the Bible. He authored a course that provides a small taste of how influential Deuteronomy is in the theology portrayed in the gospels. Take the concept of "eternal life," for example. Is this a heavenly life or a life full of God's blessing here on earth? The gospels record the sayings, but Deuteronomy holds the answers to their meaning.
Israel Bible Podcast is hosted by my colleague Dr. Cyndi Parker. Drop on two colleagues from Israel Bible Center discussing biblical texts, traditions, and ideas they encounter as they read the Bible.
JPS Jewish Study Bible
This is another Study Bible I sometimes recommend to my students who wish to broaden their perspective. Unlike publications produced by religious Jewish authorities, this JPS translation is published by Oxford University Press. It is supplied with helpful scholarly notes that stem from the academic Jewish perspective, which does not always conform to the established Jewish tradition. If you consider that such critical perspectives augment your study goals, then these notes and opinions might serve your aspirations of learning multiple takes on Jewish sacred texts.
